Women Who Inspire Us

Mats Meyer Interview with RumbaTime Watches NYC womens watches

Ah New York City, how can you not be jazzed by the architecture, the art, the fashion, and the overall brio of the people who give it life. We feel fortunate to call NYC home, and to live amongst so many of the amazing women who make the city what it is. And we felt it more important than ever in these trying times to bring you their stories. Truly, women who inspire us, and now, hopefully you too...

So we are excited to introduce you to Mats Meyer, an internationally acclaimed fashion illustrator and globe-trotter. She's been featured in esteemed fashion publications such as Refinery29 and PAPER, and we love her work. We sat down with Mats and asked her about her journey and what inspires her...

Rumba: Can you tell us a little about how you got to where you are now?

Mats: Oddly enough, I started my journey in Law. However, I always felt more like a creative at heart. When I finally made the move to NYC from Europe, not only was I incredibly inspired, but I also realized it was possible to earn a living by doing what I love, which was not really in the small fishermen's town in Spain where I grew up. So I took the plunge, and here I am!

Rumba: When was the moment you realized you were on the right path? What's the one thing you would credit as influencing your career?

Mats: I've always been attracted to the arts. Whether it be on stage or on paper. But what really inspired me were all the opportunities I encountered here in NYC.

Rumba: What talent or personal skill have you been able to use in your career in an unexpected way?

Mats: I think my background in legal really helped me with my art in the business sense of the word. Negotiation, and contract - though not the most glamorous aspect of being an artist - is nevertheless a crucial aspect of the job.

Rumba: Has your international background influenced your work aesthetic and personal style? If so, how?

Mats: Absolutely! I consider myself a romantic. What I mean by that, is that I take inspiration from emotion, whether it be relationships, beauty, sensuality or places. And to me, there's no place more romantic then Europe, so it's definitely inspired my work in a very personal way.

Rumba: How does your artwork reflect your personal style?

Mats: As an artist, I try to translate romanticism, emotions and sensuality through minimalism. In my personal life, beauty and romance are central to my life. And it's the same with regards to the "minimalism" aspect, which I apply to both my style and design preferences.

Rumba: What is your favorite watch from RumbaTime and how would you style it?

Mats: I'm in love with RumbaTime's Soho Leather Hazelnut watch. It ticks all the boxes that I look for in my personal aesthetic: quality in both materials and design, with a minimalist touch in perfect color palette form.

Rumba: Who is your own inspiration?

Mats: More than who, it's what. I live for beauty, in all its forms: sensuality, love, romance, even sadness. It always ends up being my ultimate inspiration.

Rumba: What is the main challenge you’ve been faced with in your career?

Mats: Trying to find a balance between art and business.

Rumba: If you had one piece of advice to give creative entrepreneurs starting out, what would it be?

Mats: Quality. Whatever you put out there, it should be presented in the best possible way. Luck is preparation meets opportunity, so if you're presented with the opportunity to show someone your work, make sure what you have to show is exquisite.
